 Introduction

January 19th, 2024

My name is Andrew Dimino; I am studying at the University of Tampa Film and Media Arts BFA. For a while now, I've had a passion for film; the emotions felt after watching a soul-crushing, horror-inducing, or action-packed cinema are like no other. Going to YouTube to watch explaining videos on cliffhangers or confusing endings that make viewers think for hours or days after watching the film is why I'm so dedicated to studying in this field. But I'm also interested in the media part; the editing, special effects, lighting, and cropping of specific shots make a film good or bad. The behind-the-scenes workers are the ones who visually make the film pleasing to the eye of the viewer. This love for the film began in sophomore year of high school when Cobvid 19 forced all schools to shut down. For weeks, I had nothing better to do but get into movies and TV shows. The first and greatest show I have ever seen, Breaking Bad, was the first piece of television that made me so invested that I knew I had a love for cinema. After that, I have watched countless shows and movies over the years, but one in particular I always come back to for the genius mind of Wes Anders. Mr. Fantastic Fox one of my favorite movies of all time. It showed me that there is much more creativity in a movie like this than any on-screen acting I've seen. The emotions that each character presents, along with the whacky designs and animations behind the beautifully written story, all translate to why this animated film is one of my favorites of all time.  The idea that professionals can be behind a computer and make such a visually pleasing animated film shows me that Film can be much more than many people think. But if someone like me wants to be in their shoes, the first step in doing so would have to be learning how to use different digital tools to edit, create, and transform designs into moving images. Explaining why I'm studying a part of the media arts to learn these tools and, hopefully, someday, I can use them to help create a film or show later in my professional life.

Living in Orange County, NY, there was little left for me in that area throughout my high school years. If I wanted to become a more creative person, I would need to explore around and go to different places, leading me to Florida, where I now attend the University of Tampa. Right now, though I am not as creative as I want to be, I know that by taking a class such as Digital Media, I may expand my thoughts on many different aspects of editing and the techniques it takes to master the digital world. As of right now, for my second semester, this will be the first digital media arts class I will take in my whole lifetime. As of right now, I'm really less tech-savvy than I thought I was. Knowing how in-depth the digital world can become, I hope that by the end of the semester, I'll come out of the class understanding what it must take to become the creative mind I want to be in this field of work. Of course, I expect this course not to be a cakewalk, but I'm willing to take as much time and effort as possible to take my first big step into learning about what it takes to be an editor if that's where I believe I may succeed the most in the film world!
