Artist Statement:

For about a week now, I have been working on this project shown above—a propaganda poster using an illustration of myself through Adobe Illustrator. I started this project by picking a picture of myself, which would be the best for the use of Illustrator but also express the message I wanted to have for the poster itself. After acquiring my picture, I began tracing all the features of my figure to create this art piece that would look like me. Once the illustrator portrait was completed using the pen and shape tools to make the complex design of my face, shirt, and hat, I began the work on my poster, which I had used inspiration from WWII for a pro-U.S.A propaganda poster to highlight the importance of being in this country.

My finished product had come out exactly as I imagined, with its message more than apparent in the text and, of course, the American-themed props in the poster. When beginning this project, I knew that deep down, I wanted to spread a message that meant something to me, something that I’ve always stood for, and that’s appreciating where I live. For years, I have seen many people take what we have in this country for granted: the freedom to do many things that can help express who we are and what we believe in. This is important to me because I think it’s a solid topic to discuss and because I know many people worldwide would love to live in the U.S.A. This is because, in many different places in the world, people don’t have any freedom and must live on their toes every day just to survive. Here in America, we have so much protection and liberty that people take it for granted. This is why creating a propaganda poster supporting the U.S.A. is so essential for what I stand for as a citizen in this country.

The star, the words, the flag, and the hat all represent the idea of U.S.A. pride. With it comes what is essential for people to understand. Not just to understand but to appreciate. Appreciate what they have in this country they live in. Of course, the country isn’t perfect, but I hope this poster helps shed light on the idea I'm trying to express through art. The idea is that people need to look around, open their eyes, and see that we live in a country with so many advantages and freedoms that many people in this world will never get to see. All it takes is a little time to look around at what we have, seeing that we are beyond lucky to live in the U.S.A.
